AKURE – The corpse of a newborn baby has repeatedly disappeared from the morgue of the Ondo State Specialists Hospital, Akure, the state capital.
The baby and her mother were said to have died on Wednesday during labour at the Police hospital also in Akure.
It was learnt that their remains were immediately deposited at the morgue of the state hospital.
Sources, however, said when the family of the deceased got to the hospital on Saturday to take their corpses for burial, they met only the remains of the mother while the body of the baby was missing.
He added that the family members of the deceased protested the missing of the baby’s corpse at the hospital premises.
The State Police Command said it had begun investigation into the circumstance that surrounded the missing of the dead baby.
Femi Joseph, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, confirmed the incident.
Joseph said the hospital officials would be invited for questioning, saying nobody had been arrested over the incident.
Wahab Adegbenro, the State Commissioner for Health, said the matter had been handed over to the state police command for onward investigation.
“We have handed the mortuary attendants to the police to do the investigation. We will be waiting for their investigation,” Adegbenro said.
