The 23-year-old star explained having her adolescence ‘displayed’ on screen left her with severe body image issues
GAME of Thrones actress Sophie Turner has confessed in a tell-all interview that she considered suicide and starved herself until her periods stopped during struggles with her mental health as a teenager.
The 23-year-old star, who plays Sansa Stark in the drama, explained that having her adolescence ‘displayed’ on screen left her with severe body image issues that required therapy.
Speaking to The Sunday Times Magazine, the British-born actress, from Leamington Spa, admitted she was ‘desperately unhappy’ and a ‘complete mess’ after years of playing the iconic Lady of Winterfell.
Admitting she wished her delicate teenage years hadn’t been shown to the masses, believing she would be much ‘saner’ if she hadn’t been documented in her ‘most awkward’ and ‘uncomfortable’ years.
“I was too aware of my body at a young age,” she said, having started the show at just 13. “It took over my mind, it was all I would think about – calorie counting, everything.”
The star says she even considered committing suicide, and as her eating issues reached boiling point, she even ‘ceased menstruating’ for over a year.
“That’s when I decided to have therapy,” she continued, crediting the help as the saving grace that kept her out of rehab. “Everyone should have a therapist, honestly.”
Sophie admitted she had more than just a dedicated psychologist to aid her recovery – crediting husband Joe Jonas as ‘saving her life’ during some of her darkest days.
The couple, who were engaged within a year after getting talking over Instagram in 2016, recently tied the knot in Las Vegas, with vows exchanged with candy rings.
“I was going through a phase of being very mentally unwell and he was like, ‘I can’t be with you until you love yourself’,” Sophie explained. “That was something, him doing that. He saved my life, in a way.”
Now happy and recovering from her mental health struggles, the Brit now avoids scenes in bikinis if she can because of the ‘agony’ her body image used to cause her.
Recognising that having to lose weight for a job is ‘bad for [her] mental health’, she reveals she’s turned roles down in order to keep herself out of ‘rehab’.
And to further keep any demons at bay, Sophie admits she hasn’t watched an episode of Game of Thrones since the third season, as she ‘really hates watching’ herself on screen.
Though being in the show means she’s aware of what’s happening regardless of whether she watches the drama, which she says beau Joe absolutely ‘loves’, despite her often accidental spoilers.
While the Jonas Brother’s singer was on set for most of the filming for the final season, it was Sophie who let slip the ending – accidentally telling him who takes the Iron Throne.
As for the rest of us – we will have to wait and see – though Sophie wants fans of the red-haired Sansa to be prepared for an exciting yet ‘upsetting’ finale.
“It’s a great ending,” she concluded. “From my perspective, it’s very satisfying, but I think a lot of people will be upset too.”
The Game of Thrones finale airs tonight at 9pm on HBO and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic at 2am on Monday 20th May here in the UK.
