Witnesses have disclosed the election petition in Akwa Ibom state that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cancelled collated results from their units and wards.

They also said that the electoral commission also came up with voters’ register which were not used on election day, The Nation reports.

The seven witnesses who testified on Senator Godswill Akpabio’s petition told the tribunal that they were amazed that results were cancelled without reasons from their polling units.

They said that the senator convincingly won in the units and wards, especially the ones that were collated and announced.

The ward agent in Okon ward 8, Essien Udim council, said it was a great shock that the results he already signed on at the collation centre were later cancelled in Uyo.

A lead counsel in the case to INEC, Ifeoluwa Otediran said the electoral body cancelled the results in 17 out of the 20 polling units in the ward because voters register used were not ticked and INEC because of that believed no accreditation was done.

The witness, however, countered the claim, saying that accreditation was done and their names were properly ticked before they were allowed to vote.

He said: “My Lord, it is not true. There was accreditation and our names were ticked in my ward before we were allowed to vote, and the same thing was done in other polling units which our party agents told me about. There was no cancellation in my presence. I was a ward collation officer for my party.”

The witness also said that the documents tendered in court by INEC were different from the ones in polling units in Ward 8 on election day.

“My Lord, these documents tendered here are different from the one INEC brought to the polling units in Ward 8, Odoro Ikot, Essien Udim council on election day. It is a surprise that INEC gave us photocopied documents. I am surprised that there were original documents.

“Our names were ticked on the voters’ register they gave to us, but it is shocking that our names are not ticked in this one here at the tribunal,” the witness said.

The same situation also occurred in Ukana West 10 and Ukana East Ward 9 as results were also cancelled without the agents’ knowledge.

The court also granted the lead counsel to the petitioner, Wednesday, S I Ameh, June 19, and Thursday June 20 for him to present all witnesses to give their testimonies.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that one of the witnesses of Senator Godswill Akpabio simply identified as Mr. Usen, on Tuesday, June 11, admitted that there was no accreditation in polling units in the ward where he was a collation agent.
