AN IRANIAN military commander has claimed the United States wouldn’t dare to attack his country in a fiery speech.

Speaking to the country’s Fars news agency, Major General Gholamali Rashid bragged about his nation’s “spirit of resistance”.

A senior commander in Iran‘s Revolutionary Guards, Rashid’s words on Wednesday come as war tensions continue to rise between the country and the United States.

Taunting President Donald Trump, the general said: “If the criminal America and its Western and regional allies don’t dare carry out a face-to-face military attack against our country, it is because of the spirit of resistance and sacrifice of the people and youth.”

This week, Washington sent more military forces to the Middle East, including an aircraft carrier, B-52 bombers and Patriot missiles.

The show of force is in retaliation to what the US claims are Iranian threats to its troops and interests in the region.

In a tweet addressed to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday, one of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s top advisers slammed the US for their deliberate provocations.

Hesameddin Ashena wrote on Twitter: “You £SecPompeo do not bring warships to our region and call it deterrence. That’s called provocation.

“It compels Iran to illustrate its own deterrence, which you call provocation. You see the cycle?”

He also called on Pompeo — who has been responsible for ratcheting tensions between the two nations — not to “corner” President Trump.

Later on Wednesday, another Revolutionary Guards commander was quoted by Iranian media as saying Iran’s military had complete control of the Persian Gulf north of the Strait of Hormuz.

“Everything north of the Strait of Hormuz is under our control,” Ali Fadavi was quoted as saying — referring to the strait at the southeast of the Gulf through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil consumed globally flows.

“Movements of American battleships in the region are under the complete control of Iran’s army and the Revolutionary Guards,” he went on.

In a statement, the US military hit back, saying it would continue to fly and sail wherever international law allowed.

Captain Bill Urban, spokesman of US Central Command, said: “We stand ready with our allies and partners to ensure freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce throughout the US Central Command area of responsibility.”

It follows a number of bizarre, threatening tweets from the US President.

On Sunday, President Trump tweeted: “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again!”

In response, Iran’s President promised “resistance” to the US, branding the country a “bully”.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threatened the “demise” of the US on Wednesday in a fiery speech.
