Official: Arsenal sign Austrian star from Bayern Munich

Arsenal Women have completed the signing of Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger. Zinsberger is Austria’s first choice goalkeeper and comes to provide competition to current first choice Pauline Peyraud-Magnin with Sari van Veenendaal having left the club. Zinsberger is good friends with compatriot Viki Schnaderbeck and spent some time in London and at London Colney when Schnaderbeck signed for the club last summer. Bayern announced the signing of Carina Schluter back in April, with Zinsberger’s decision to leave Bayern having already been communicated during last season.

Manuela is 23 and won 2 Frauenbundesliga titles with Bayern and has 40 caps for her country. She is also very comfortable with the ball at her feet, which fits perfectly into Joe Montemurro’s possession style. She joins Jill Roord, Lisa Evans, Vivianne Miedema and Viki Schnaderbeck in decanting from Bayern to Arsenal and she probably won’t be the last.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was a regular for Bayern Munich last season, making six appearances on their journey to the Champions League semi-finals – but she’s expecting a new challenge in the Women’s Super League.

“It’s such an amazing feeling,” Zinsbeger told Arsenal.com. “I know a lot of the players here. We have a really good team here with really good quality and impressive performances, so I’m looking forward to being part of it!”

“I try to watch many games this season, but I’ve had my own games in Germany so it’s really hard. But I’ve watched some games and we’re a really good team with really good quality and performances. I’m looking forward to being part of it. Hopefully we can win the league next season.”

“I know Viki the most because she’s Austrian, but also Lisa, Viv, Lia, Tabea and Pauline. I talked to her (Pauline) twice and she said really good things and that I would be happy here – and also they would be happy if I would change clubs! I’m really happy that I’m part of it, so I’m looking forward to it.”

“I’m a modern goalkeeper. I want to play rather than being a goalkeeper who plays kick and rush. I want to play with my defenders, midfielder and I think that’s the modern goalkeeper style. I like this.”

On how she found out about our interest she said: “My agent got a call but obviously it was one year before I was there with Viki together, so I know most of the players and most of the staff, then it was really easy and I’m really happy to be part of this team.”

On Montemurro’s influence in her decision she said: “We had a lot of good discussions and we spoke about his philosophy, what he wants from me and what’s my part in the team. I think the most important thing is the focus he wants me to have in each session and he can help me with that.”

Joe Montemurro added “We are delighted to welcome Manuela to Arsenal. She is a world-class goalkeeper, and her achievements mirror that. Her experience and ability will be a great addition to our squad.”

Send your best wishes to Manuela Zinsberger as she joins Arsenal from Bayern Munich… Thanks
