According to the Daily Independent, Manchester United have missed out on the signing of Borussia Dortmund and England star Jadon Sancho. Solskjaer plans to overhaul a squad that is begging for quality this summer and has identified Sancho as one of the players that can help his quest.
But he’s likely to miss out on the England youngster due to his side’s failure to qualify for the Champions League next season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished in sixth place this season and will not be playing in Europe’s biggest competition.
With Dortmund already guaranteed of a champions league place next season, it is unlikely to see Sancho leaving the Signal Iduna Park for Old Trafford this summer.
According to the Independent, Sancho was United’s number one target for a summer rebuild, and they were willing to pay Borussia Dortmund up to £100m for the 19-year-old.
But United’s recent performances, ending up sixth in the Premier League table, have ended any prospect of a deal. United will be playing Europa League football again next season, entering at the second qualifying round in late July.
There are now major reservations on the side of the player whether Old Trafford would be the right environment for his development. are still interested in signing Sancho, who has been instrumental in taking Dortmund to second place in the Bundesliga this year.
They are now weighing up whether to offer the £100m that he would cost. Missing out on Sancho will be a huge blow Solskjaer’s transfer plans for the summer. The former Cardiff manager revealed he will be signing young and fast players to his squad for next season.
Signing Sancho would have been a major coup for the Red Devils but will now have to turn attentions to other targets following their failure to finish in the top four. Meanwhile, Solskjaer doesn’t believe signing a centre-back is a priority in the summer transfer window for Manchester United, according to reports.
United had a resurgence after sacking Jose Mourinho and appointing Solskjaer, who won 14 of his 19 games while in caretaker charge of the club, but it is now eight defeats in his last 12 matches, highlighting the scale of the rebuilding job ahead in the summer.
The Red Devils failed to keep a clean sheet at Old Trafford all season and conceded 54 Premier League goals, finishing sixth. However, the Metro claims that, despite wanting to sign up to five players this summer, Solskjaer will prioritise four other positions over strengthening the centre of his defence.
Solskjaer will look for a ‘right-back, left-back, central midfielder and right winger’ and ‘will not buy a centre-back for the sake of it’. The report adds that high-calibre players such as Raphael Varane and Kalidou Koulibaly would be of interest but they won’t force it.
Real Madrid’s Varane would have to ‘intimate he’d be keen on a move to Old Trafford’ while Koulibaly could be a tough negotiation as Napoli would want a fee close to £100million.
Solskjaer apparently feels that his first-choice centre-back Victor Lindelof could do with a more ‘robust’ partner in the middle of defence and United are ‘prepared to wait for the right defender’.
