WHAT?! Fan calls for Barcelona to SACK Messi, gives reason for request

In what will be a major shock should it happen, a Barcelona fan has called on the La Liga giants to sack captain and legend, Lionel Messi, despite the Argentine forward being on course to lead the club to a league and cup double.

Messi has had another great season having scored 34 goals in 33 league appearances as well as 12 goals in 10 Champions League games, putting him on course to end the season as European golden boot award winner.

Despite these feats, Opera News app user David1er still believes the Catalan club should be blamed for Barcelona’s recent failures in the Champions League and should be let go by the club as a result of his inability to carry Barca beyond the last eight and last four of the Champions League.

“If I [were] the president [Josep Maria Bartomeu], I will sack Messi because he doesn’t know anything,” wrote the fan in a comment on the Opera News app.

Messi had failed to score in the second leg of Barca’s losses to AS Roma in 2018 and Liverpool this year despite the club holding three-goal advantages on both occasions.

The fan went on to push the blame for Barca’s woes in Europe from coach, Ernesto Valverde, to Messi, suggesting the praise would have gone to Messi if Barcelona had qualified in any of those games.

David1er added: “It’s the same coach who was there before Barça [beat] Liverpool 3- 0 and that time nobody [talked] about the coach and you [say] Barça won because of Messi.”

He added: “Now that Liverpool won, you people are saying the coach is not good. What about Messi? He [can’t] even score one goal? If Barça win it’s because of Messi but if Barça lose it’s because of the coach and some players, what is wrong with you people?”

Another Opera News app with the username TapOut agreed to an extent with the notion that the criticism of Valverde would be much less had Barcelona made it through to the Champions League final in either of the last two seasons.

“If Barca would had won the match [against Liverpool] they would have been a [great] celebration and giving of high fives to the coach,” the fan wrote on the Opera News app.

Recall that Valverde has received widespread criticism for his failure to win the Champions League as well as his style of play.

What are your thoughts on this matter? Is Messi to be blamed for Barcelona’s woes in the Champions League?
